Energinet Managing Director and Taipower Vice President Engage in Strategic Dialogue on Strengthening Energy Resilience

Focus on Offshore Wind Integration, Geothermal & Hydropower Upgrades, and Green Fuels
The Trade Council of Denmark, Taipei hosted a media gathering today featuring Mr. Peter Markussen, Managing Director from Energinet supporting/invited by the Danish Decarbonization alliance. The event also specially invited Mr. Chin-Chung Wu, Vice President of Taipower, to share his valuable experience on ensuring power reliability during Taiwan's energy transition. Facing the challenges of rising renewable energy penetration, both sides engaged in deep dialogue on leveraging "Open Markets," "Sector Coupling," and "Digitalization" to ensure power stability and security.
Deep Dialogue: Integrating Wind, Upgrading Hydro/Geothermal, and Green Fuels
During the exchange, Mr. Markussen and Vice President Wu conducted in-depth discussions on critical technical issues. The dialogue explored challenges in offshore wind and grid integration, strategies for enhancing Taiwan's energy resilience through geothermal deployment and hydropower upgrades, and the potential of using green fuels to support grid stability. This signifies that Denmark's contribution in Taiwan has developed from renewable energy installation to also include technical exchanges on grid operation and diversified energy dispatch.
Danish Leadership: Powering Over 50% of Taiwan's Offshore Wind
Denmark remains Taiwan's steadfast partner in energy transition. Danish companies—including Ørsted, CIP, and Vestas—have contributed more than half of Taiwan's installed offshore wind capacity. Denmark was Taiwan's largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2022, and current data indicates it is on track to reclaim the top spot in 2025.
Energinet's Expertise: Three Tools to Address Intermittency
Managing a system with nearly 90% renewable generation, Peter Markussen emphasized balancing the "Energy Trilemma": Green Transition, Affordability, and Security of Supply. He highlighted three primary tools used in Denmark:
1. Open Market: Utilizing market mechanisms to balance supply and demand.
2. Sector Coupling: Integrating the power sector with other sectors like heating and transport.
3. Digitalization for Operational Efficiency: Deploying advanced forecasting tools and smart grid technologies to enhance supervision.
Director Peter Sand: Affirming Taiwan's Progress and Cost-Reflective Pricing
Mr. Peter Sand, Director of The Trade Council of Denmark, Taipei, affirmed Taiwan's achievements in its energy transition. He expressed strong support for the continued build-out of renewable energy and encouraged the adoption of electricity pricing structures that reasonably reflect generation costs.
Director Sand emphasized that members of the Danish Decarbonization Alliance—including Ørsted, CIP, Vestas, Everllence, and COWI—are committed to bringing diverse expertise to Taiwan. Beyond offshore wind, these companies will contribute experience in Geothermal energy, CCUS, and Power-to-X solutions, aiding Taiwan in bolstering its energy resilience and meeting its net-zero commitment.
