Ørsted has received the Taiwan Biodiversity Action Award for the second consecutive year and is the only offshore wind company recognized this year. Ørsted was awarded the Silver Award in the For-Profit Organization Category at the 2026 Taiwan Biodiversity Action Award (TWBA), becoming the only offshore wind company recognized this year. This marks the second consecutive year that Ørsted has received the prestigious biodiversity award, reflecting broad recognition of the company's commitment to protecting nature while developing and operating large-scale offshore wind farms in Taiwan.

Organized by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE), the TWBA is one of the country's most prestigious recognitions for biodiversity conservation. Established in response to global biodiversity trends, the award encourages organizations across sectors to integrate biodiversity into their business practices and contribute to nature conservation.

Now in its fourth year, the award evaluates participating organizations across four key dimensions: business relevance, strategy & innovation, ecosystem services, and implementation & performance. It recognizes organizations that demonstrate outstanding leadership in protecting natural capital and fostering harmony between people and nature.

Ørsted's award-winning initiatives this year focus on two key biodiversity actions: marine wildlife monitoring and bird habitat enhancement. Built on scientific research and close collaboration with local partners, these initiatives demonstrate how offshore wind development can coexist with and contribute positively to marine and coastal ecosystems. 1. Marine Wildlife Monitoring: Building Scientific Knowledge of Taiwan's Marine Biodiversity

Since 2024, Ørsted has partnered with Professor Nan-Jay Su and his research team at National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) to establish systematic monitoring and tracking programs for three marine species in the waters off central Taiwan: the Taiwanese white dolphin, the Taiwanese wedgefish, and the Taiwan seabream. Working closely with local fishing communities in Changhua, Ørsted has also established a citizen science network involving approximately 130 local fishers, who contribute observations of marine wildlife to help researchers better understand species distribution and movement patterns.

  • 15 sightings of Taiwanese white dolphin groups: Through dedicated line-transect surveys, researchers have recorded 15 group sightings, identifying 20 individual dolphins, including two individuals not documented during the previous three years.
  • More than 2,500 records of Taiwanese wedgefish: By combining satellite tagging with observations reported by local fishing captains, the project has compiled over 2,500 occurrence records, providing valuable insights into the species' movement and habitat use.
  • More than 500 acoustic detections of Taiwan seabream: Using acoustic telemetry, researchers have collected over 500 acoustic detection records, helping to better understand the species' behavior and habitat utilization.

The project also successfully documented Taiwan's first complete round-trip migration route of a Streaked Shearwater, tracking a journey of nearly 5,000 kilometers.

2. Enhancing Bird Habitats to Support Migratory Species

Located along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway (EAAF), Taiwan serves as a vital breeding, feeding, and stopover site for numerous migratory bird species. Over the past two years, Ørsted has collaborated with National Taiwan University, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, and local conservation organizations to conduct ecological research on migratory raptors in Changhua.

The initiative has since expanded to other key bird habitats across Taiwan, supporting conservation efforts for seven priority migratory bird species, including the Streaked Shearwater, Little Tern, Black-faced Spoonbill, Eurasian Curlew, Saunders's Gull, Kentish Plover, and Oriental Stork, as well as one migratory raptor species.

  • Partnering with the Changhua Wild Bird Society to monitor Grey-faced Buzzards at their nocturnal roosts in northern Bagua Mountain: The project has recorded 2,716 Grey-faced Buzzards and contributed more than 50,000 additional raptor migration records, significantly strengthening the ecological baseline for migratory raptors in the Changhua region.
  • Working with the Maiziliao Cultural Association to restore abandoned fishponds at the Zhuoshui River estuary into coastal wetlands: These restored habitats provide important feeding and refueling sites for migratory birds such as the Black-faced Spoonbill and Kentish Plover during their long-distance journeys.
  • Collaborating with the Keelung Wild Bird Society to install artificial nesting burrows on Mianhua Islet: In addition to expanding breeding habitat for the **Streaked Shearwater**, the team successfully used satellite tracking to document Taiwan's first complete migration route of a tagged Streaked Shearwater, "Pingfeng-2 (屏豐2號)," covering a round-trip journey of nearly 5,000 kilometers.

Looking ahead, Ørsted will continue working closely with government agencies, academia, industry, and local communities to advance the sustainable development, construction, and operation of offshore wind farms in Taiwan. Through science-based, nature-positive initiatives, Ørsted aims to further strengthen biodiversity conservation and demonstrate how offshore wind can coexist with and contribute to thriving marine and coastal ecosystems.

【Ørsted – Offshore Wind Farms in Operation】
.Ørsted is the largest shareholder in Taiwan's first offshore wind farm, Formosa 1 Offshore Wind Farm, holding a 35% stake. Formosa 1 Phase II construction was completed at the end of 2019 and entered commercial operation in early 2020, expanding installed capacity from 8 MW to 128 MW.
.The Greater Changhua 1 & 2a Offshore Wind Farms are located 35 to 60 kilometers off the coast of Changhua County, with a total grid-connected capacity of 900 MW. The projects generate enough clean electricity annually to meet the equivalent yearly power consumption of approximately 1 million Taiwanese households.
.The Greater Changhua 1 has an installed capacity of 605 MW, of which Ørsted holds a 50% ownership stake. The remaining 50% stake is jointly owned by an international infrastructure investment consortium comprising La Caisse (the Québec Deposit and Investment Fund) of Canada and Taiwan's Cathay Private Equity Sustainability Fund.
.At the Greater Changhua 1 Offshore Wind Farms, Ørsted is conducting the world's first coral propagation feasibility study, ReCoral by Ørsted™, which explores the use of offshore wind turbine substructures in tropical waters to create new habitats for coral ecosystems.

【Under Construction – Greater Changhua 2b & 4 Offshore Wind Farms】
.In June 2018, Ørsted secured development rights through a competitive tender for its 2nd large-scale offshore wind project in Taiwan — the 920 MW Greater Changhua 2b & 4 Offshore Wind Farms. In July 2020, Ørsted signed a CPPA with Taiwan's largest semiconductor manufacturer.
.The Greater Changhua 4 Offshore Wind Farm has an installed capacity of 583 MW, with Ørsted holding a 50% ownership stake and the remaining 50% owned by Cathay Life Insurance.
.Ørsted has signed an agreement with Cathay Life Insurance Co., Ltd. and its subsidiary Cathay Power Corporation (collectively "Cathay") for a joint investment under which Cathay will acquire a 55% ownership stake in the 632 MW Greater Changhua 2a Offshore Wind Farm. The transaction is expected to be completed upon the project’s commercial operation date in the third quarter of 2026.
