MOEA Warns Proposed Budget Cuts Could Undermine Taiwan's Drone Industry and Defense Capability

The MOEA on July 21 urged lawmakers to reject a proposal by the Kuomintang (KMT) caucus to suspend the government's integrated uncrewed systems development program and eliminate its FY2026 budget. The ministry warned that cutting funding to zero would severely undermine one of Taiwan's fastest-growing industries, weaken national defense resilience, and disrupt efforts to build a trusted, non-China supply chain. It added that further reductions, following previous cuts to military drone procurement, would hinder the growth of more than 267 domestic suppliers and dozens of listed companies, while compromising the use of drones for essential government operations.
MOEA said FY2026 is a critical year for full implementation of the program, with approximately NT$8 billion allocated to stimulate public-sector procurement, advance key technologies, expand R&D and production infrastructure, and improve regulatory frameworks. The ministry noted that government support helps share R&D risks, accelerate industrial upgrading, and strengthen international competitiveness. It emphasized that Taiwan's drone exports have already surpassed last year's total in the first half of this year, underscoring the need for stable policy and budget support to achieve the sector's NT$40 billion production target by 2030.
