The International Maritime Organization (IMO) approved a global carbon pricing mechanism on April 11, aiming to cut international shipping emissions by 20% by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2050. Beginning in 2028, vessels exceeding annual greenhouse gas intensity (GFI) targets will be charged $100 per tonne of emissions, with penalties up to $380 per tonne for surpassing stricter thresholds. Ships that meet lower emissions benchmarks can earn and trade carbon credits.

Ørsted Achieves Landmark Energization of Greater Changhua 2b Onshore Substation in Taiwan
Ørsted today (15) announced the successful energization of the first onshore substation (OnSS) of the 920 MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms. The substation of Greater Changhua 2b has been connected to the Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) onshore substation in the Changhua Coastal Industrial Park.

Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs(MOEA) Chin-Tsang Ho attended the 2025 Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) NET ZERO DAY Forum, titled "Building a New Force for Energy Efficiency," organized by ITRI. During the forum, he affirmed ITRI's contributions to innovative energy transition technologies and the participation of key enterprises. He also expressed hope that energy efficiency solutions utilizing digital technologies would be implemented across various industry sectors to help achieve the nation's carbon reduction goals. He emphasized that technological innovation is the core driver of energy-saving efforts and that Taiwan will accelerate the promotion of deep energy-saving programs through relevant regulations and incentives.

MOEA Industrial Development Administration Director-General transition, strengthening industry resilience through four key pillars
The Industrial Development Administration(IDA) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs(MOEA) held a Director-General leadership transition ceremony on the 26th of March, with Deputy Minister of MOEA, Cynthia Kiang, overseeing the handover. The position of Director-General of the IDA was passed to Chyou-Huey Chiou, the current Director-General of the Department of Industrial Technology of the MOEA. Director-General Chiou has been involved with the IDA's predecessor, the Industrial Development Bureau, and has participated in numerous major industrial transformations in Taiwan. His experience spans across manufacturing automation, electronics, information services, and key fields such as semiconductors and smart electric vehicles. He is entrusted with the responsibility of advancing Taiwan's industrial development.

Myanmar Earthquake Response: MSF Launches Secondary Healthcare Support and Emergency Mental Health Training Initiative
Following the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) deployed an assessment team that observed significant damage to the country's overall healthcare system, with secondary care facilities being particularly affected. Adrian Guadarrama, MSF's Program Manager in Myanmar, stated, "The healthcare system has been severely impacted at multiple levels, with secondary care being particularly affected, which is hospitals. MSF teams are prioritizing efforts to provide immediate relief by strengthening secondary healthcare services."
