British Standards Institution (BSI) Awards WFE the First ISO 14068-1 Carbon Neutrality Verification Certificate

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has announced that the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) has been awarded the first ISO 14068-1:2023 carbon neutrality verification certificate (Climate Change Management - Transition to Net Zero Part 1: Carbon Neutrality) by the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE). Harold Pradal, President of Assurance Services and Executive Committee Member of BSI Group, personally visited Taiwan to present the certificate.
As the initiator of the "Declaration of London," BSI facilitated the publication of the IWA 42:2022 Net Zero Guidelines by ISO, and continues to promote the development of ISO Net Zero standards. The successful verification of TWSE showcases the standard's role in aiding global carbon reduction and sustainable development.
Since establishing the world's first environmental management standard, BS 7750 (the predecessor of ISO 14001) in 1992, BSI has consistently supported climate action through "Standards." The ISO 14068-1 international carbon neutrality standard was developed based on BSI's Specification for the Demonstration of Carbon Neutrality (PAS 2060), enhancing the requirements for actual reductions.
The standard assists enterprises, organizations, services, and products of all sizes in setting clear carbon reduction targets, demonstrating their commitment to greenhouse gas emission reductions, and alleviating concerns about greenwashing.
Peter Pu, Managing Director of BSI, stated, "At this critical moment of global climate challenges, we are pleased to see TWSE's efforts in advancing sustainable development and adhering to the highest international standards, resulting in the world's first ISO 14068-1 carbon neutrality verification certificate for a stock exchange. We hope this achievement will inspire more enterprises to accelerate their transition to net zero through ISO standards."
Sherman Lin (林修銘), Chairman of TCX & TWSE, commented, "TWSE aims to be a benchmark for Taiwanese enterprises, bearing the significant mission of responding to government policies and international standards. In early 2023, in response to Taiwan's 2050 net zero transition goal, TWSE set a near-term target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 37.8% from 2022 levels by 2030, and a long-term goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. TWSE will implement energy-saving and carbon-reduction measures such as equipment upgrades and renewable energy usage, and utilize high-quality carbon credits provided by Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange (TCX) to offset remaining emissions, maintaining its commitment to carbon neutrality. By passing BSI's rigorous carbon neutrality verification, TWSE aims to lead by example and inspire Taiwanese listed companies to pursue sustainable development collectively, contributing to the global net zero target."
TCX supported TWSE in achieving carbon neutrality by providing high-quality international carbon credits through the global carbon trading platform. Additionally, TCX aids the government in training carbon management professionals. As a strategic partner, BSI collaborates with TCX to offer a series of international standard certification courses, strengthening sustainable talent and aligning with global standards.
These courses include ISO 14064-1 greenhouse gas inventory, ISO 14067 carbon footprint, and ISO 14068-1 carbon neutrality certification. To date, over 20 sessions have been conducted, with more than 600 participants, and the number is expected to exceed 1,000 by the end of this year.
