OMNI Features|U.S. Advances Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiative to Scale Domestic SAF Production

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Department of Agriculture (USDA), along with other federal agencies, launched the "Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Initiative" to establish a coordinated strategy to scale up commercial SAF production. The initiative builds on a government-wide MOU to lower SAF costs, strengthen energy security, and expand domestic production and use.
The initiative is guided by the "SAF Grand Challenge Roadmap: Flight Plan for Sustainable Aviation Fuel", developed with national laboratories, universities, nongovernmental organizations, and stakeholders across the aviation, agriculture, and energy sectors. The roadmap adopts a whole-of-government approach focused on reducing technology, supply-chain, and market risks through demonstrations, funding, and policy analysis, while addressing barriers to SAF distribution and end use.

From October 2021 through September 2024, federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, Environmental Protection Agency, and NASA, advanced the initiative through new funding opportunities, technical assistance, interagency coordination, and data and modeling support. In November 2024, the agencies also released "Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge Roadmap Implementation Framework" outlining ongoing actions, identifying program gaps, and highlighting barriers that must be addressed to meet SAF objectives.
Progress is tracked through 4 key metrics: estimated U.S. SAF production, lifecycle CO₂-equivalent emissions reductions from SAF production and use, planned domestic production capacity, and relevant research, development, demonstration, and deployment projects. The initiative also emphasizes the economic benefits of expanding SAF supply chains, including job creation, domestic manufacturing, and development in rural and agricultural communities.
