Ørsted Marks 10 Years of Investment in Taiwan at 2026 Energy Taiwan

Ørsted marked its 10th anniversary of investment in Taiwan at the 2026 Energy Taiwan exhibition on Oct. 14, thanking local partners and government, industry and academic stakeholders while outlining its future plans.

Since establishing its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Taiwan in 2016, Ørsted has become one of the country's major foreign investors, ranking 2nd in cumulative foreign investment. The company has participated in the construction of 199 offshore wind turbines, representing nearly 2 GW of installed capacity.

Ørsted Asia-Pacific President Per Mejnert Kristensen (古沛明) said the company had witnessed and contributed to Taiwan's offshore wind industry evolving from its early stages to the construction and operation of large-scale wind farms. Despite challenges including the pandemic, supply chain constraints and complex construction conditions in the Taiwan Strait, Ørsted remained committed to working with government, industry and local partners. He added that their collective efforts had not only delivered renewable electricity but also developed local talent, driven industrial growth and established a deeply rooted offshore wind ecosystem.

Advancing the Dadu Offshore Wind Farm Projects

Ørsted Taiwan Chair Christy Wang (汪欣潔) said the company would build on the development, construction and operational experience gained from its 1.82 GW Greater Changhua Offshore Wind Farms clusters to advance the Dadu offshore wind projects (大肚離岸風場) off central Taiwan. The company will continue investing in innovation, talent development, community engagement and biodiversity initiatives to meet growing demand for green electricity and create long-term value for industry, society and the environment.

Ørsted formally introduced its Dadu 1 Offshore Wind Farm project at the exhibition. The project received preliminary environmental impact assessment approval for a capacity of 924 MW and is located 38–61 kilometers offshore of Changhua County.

Søren Westergaard Jensen (顏森緯), Head of Project Development APAC at Ørsted, said Dadu 1 aims to be "more sustainable and more resilient," using innovative technologies to improve operational efficiency and reliability while maximizing renewable power generation. The project will also promote decarbonization across businesses and supply chains and work with academic institutions and conservation partners to develop science-based biodiversity measures, with the goal of achieving a Net Positive Impact on biodiversity.

Rooted in Local Heritage and Environmental Stewardship

The name "Dadu" (大肚) reflects central Taiwan's cultural and natural heritage. The area was historically associated with the Dadu Kingdom (大肚王國), a coalition of Indigenous Plains communities in parts of present-day Taichung, Changhua and Nantou during the 16th and 17th centuries. Over millions of years, the Dadu River has also transported sediment offshore, helping form seabed conditions considered suitable for offshore wind development. Ørsted indicated thar the name reflects its commitment to working in harmony with local communities and the natural environment.

Building on its experience at Greater Changhua, Ørsted aims to advance the Dadu projects through local partnerships, technical innovation and responsible environmental practices. The company said it will continue collaborating with government, industry and local communities to support Taiwan's energy transition, deliver reliable renewable electricity and expand the economic, social and environmental benefits of offshore wind over the next decade.
