EnergyOMNI's ROC (Renewables On Campus) Campus Lecture Inspires Law Students

EnergyOMNI Enera Media Ltd.'s ROC (Renewables On Campus) campus lecture continues to gain momentum, arriving at the School of Law, Soochow University on May 30 to share the intricacies of renewable energy with liberal arts students for the first time. The seminar's topics included "A Practical Overview of Carbon Issues" and "The Challenges of Offshore Wind Development and Ecological Balance."
The event featured prominent speakers such as Chih-An Lee, Senior Sustainability Advisor of Ørsted Taiwan, and James Wu, the CEO of Maximus Consulting, who shared their valuable experiences and motivations for entering the renewable energy industry, inspiring students' passion for the green energy sector.
As an alumna of Soochow University, Xin-En Wu, Founder of EnergyOMNI, was particularly excited to return to her alma mater. Transitioning from a liberal arts background to the renewable energy industry was challenging but allowed her to accumulate rich experiences. Through this seminar, she aimed to address students' questions about various renewable energy industries and ignite their interest and enthusiasm for the future of green energy.
James Wu shared his journey from the tech-electronics industry to the offshore wind power sector. He emphasized that renewable energy sources such as wind, hydro, and solar are effective means to achieve net-zero carbon targets. Due to its abundant wind resources and minimal interference, offshore wind has the potential to generate more power and offers significant development opportunities.
Wu highlighted that developing offshore wind farms is a lengthy process, often taking seven years or more, requiring large-scale projects, high technical standards, and substantial investment in personnel and capital. Therefore, he encouraged students from all disciplines to master English and maintain their enthusiasm as they could find their place in this promising industry.
Lee from Ørsted shared her transition from a chemistry background to the renewable energy industry. Having worked in the semiconductor industry and environmental groups, her involvement in amending Taiwan's "Electricity Act" and "Renewable Energy Development Act" led her to the offshore wind power sector. At Ørsted, Lee is responsible for promoting sustainability across various aspects, including ecology, greenhouse gas emissions, employee and community engagement, and material recycling. Lee pointed out that while renewable energy is rapidly developing, photovoltaic and offshore wind installations can still impact the environment.
Therefore, Ørsted focuses on mitigating these impacts and achieving positive outcomes through restoration and compensation. Lee shared Ørsted's ambitious goals: starting in 2030, all new renewable energy projects must achieve a net-positive ecological impact, alongside setting targets for material recycling, human rights, and labor rights to strive for sustainable corporate operations.

Xin-En Wu noted her nearly decade-long involvement in the offshore wind power industry, during which she observed that many aspects of Taiwan's regulations and policies need to be translated, explained, and clarified so that government units and developers can better understand each other. This experience motivated her to establish EnergyOMNI Media, an energy-focused magazine, to promote connections between domestic and global energy industries.
Wu further highlighted that Taiwan's renewable energy development began with the 2009 Renewable Energy Development Act, which was revised and enlarged the capacity regarding renewable energy in 2019 to accelerate industrial development. However, the rapid enactment of regulations also brought implementation challenges that require administrative orders and procedures to address. She expressed hope that future law students could identify research topics to improve regulatory frameworks.
The Renewables On Campus is a non-profit initiative rooted in the original intent of founders from both companies, Xin-En Wu and James Wu to share real-world experiences in the renewable energy sector with students nationwide. By doing so, they aim to provide students with a deep understanding of various renewable energy industries during their academic years, laying a solid foundation for their future careers. The ROC campus tour is in full swing.
EnergyOMNI welcomes collaboration invitations from universities and enterprises nationwide to promote renewable energy and the 2050 net-zero carbon vision jointly. Through these seminars, students gain valuable insights from industry experts and prepare themselves for their future careers in the green energy world, creating a bright future in the realm of renewable energy.
