SCI Pharmtech Joins Enel X Taiwan's Virtual Power Plant to Achieve a Triple Win in Resilience, Sustainability, and Profitability

As global supply chains place increasing emphasis on low-carbon manufacturing and green procurement, net zero has become a critical factor in maintaining competitiveness. The biotechnology and pharmaceutical sector faces significant decarbonization pressure while also needing to comply with stringent GMP requirements and maintain highly reliable power supply for precision manufacturing processes.
Enel X Taiwan, which obtained its "Specified Electricity Supplier" license earlier this year, announced that active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturer SCI Pharmtech, Inc. (SCI) has officially joined its Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Starting from the Q3 2026, SCI Pharmtech will integrate approximately 1 MW of flexible capacity from its backup power assets into Taipower's Energy Trading Platform for "Spinning Reserve Ancillary Services," supporting grid stability while maintaining production reliability and product quality.
Wei-Chun Weng, Chairperson of SCI Pharmtech, stated that the company has established comprehensive API manufacturing capabilities and focuses on international markets, with more than 90% of revenue generated from exports. "We introduced ESG management practices in 2003 and established an energy management team in 2025 to continuously evaluate and improve energy efficiency. Joining the VPP not only enhances our energy management capabilities but also represents a transition from passive energy conservation to actively creating energy value."

When a grid dispatch instruction is issued, Enel X's VPP will use an automated control system to seamlessly transfer part of SCI Pharmtech's grid load to on-site backup generation within 5 minutes, enabling up to one hour of grid support, without disrupting manufacturing operations.
Enel X Taiwan Chairman Wei-Ting Chen noted that pharmaceutical manufacturing requires extremely high standards for power quality and operational reliability. "Through VPP participation, enterprises can transform idle backup power assets into new revenue streams and reinvest these benefits into renewable energy procurement and sustainability initiatives," Chen said. The partnership demonstrates how high-energy and precision manufacturing industries can simultaneously achieve operational resilience, carbon reduction goals, and economic benefits through energy asset optimization.
