The expansion of Siemens Gamesa's Taichung nacelle assembly plant was completed at the end of last year (2023), and reached the phase 3 development target with supply chains, total 19 companies.

President Ing-Wen Tsai attended the completion ceremony of the new plant today (1), stated: "In 2021, Siemens Gamesa established the sole assembly plant outside Europe in Taiwan, and further invested in the second plant construction in 2022, which will be in commission in the second quarter of this year, creating jobs opportunities and deepen the supply chain capability in Taiwan."

Niels Steenberg, Chairman of Offshore Wind Operations & Development, Siemens Gamesa Asia Pacific, said: "Siemens Gamesa will carry out full nacelle production and assembly at the Taichung nacelle plant in the second quarter of this year, and we look forward to deepening the cooperation with local offshore wind turbine suppliers in Taiwan to cultivate capability and accelerate the learning curve. We will work together participating phase 3 offshore wind development in Taiwan and enhance the value of the supply chain through comprehensive effects, and mark Taiwan the nacelle assembly center in the Asia-Pacific region."

In November of the previous year, MOEA officially announced the contents of the Industrial Relevance Plan for the Offshore Wind Zonal Development 3.2 Auction. It set out 24 items with a total of 120 points, covering aspects such as wind turbine nacelle assembly production lines and workstations, nacelle operations and maintenance, blade maintenance, and the production processes and workstations of critical components. Developers were given the flexibility to choose criteria, with a baseline score threshold of 70 points.

SGRE's Taichung nacelle assembly plant entered the retrofit expansion phase in 2022. Shifting from assembling SG 8.0-167 DD to locally producing and assembling SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines, the turbine installation capacity will increase from 8 MW to 14 MW, meeting government standards for continuous assembly production lines. The expanded nacelle plant will have an annual capacity of 2 GW installed capacity, with nearly tens of thousands of components invested in nacelle production. The Taichung nacelle assembly plant will initially support the 1,044 MW Hai Long Offshore Wind Farm Project and subsequent projects in the Zonal Development 3.2 wind farm and the Asia-Pacific region.

Additionally, SGRE announced its first-ever Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tien-li Offshore Wind Technology, aiming to provide localized operation and maintenance services. This includes hiring local blade maintenance technicians to meet localization requirements.
