|SunCable's AAPowerLink Secures Major Commonwealth Government Environmental Approvals
SunCable's AAPowerLink project has achieved significant regulatory milestones, securing approvals from both the Commonwealth Government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act 1999) and the Northern Territory's Environment Protection Act. These approvals enable the progression of the project, which aims to supply industrial-scale green electricity to Darwin and Singapore. The project's vast infrastructure, spanning approximately 2,000 km, is set to become one of Australia's largest energy initiatives, highlighting national confidence in SunCable's capability to deliver within approved environmental guidelines.
With these approvals, SunCable is now focusing on advancing the AAPowerLink towards a Final Investment Decision by 2027. Key efforts include negotiating Indigenous Land Use Agreements in the Northern Territory, engaging with Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) for the subsea cable interconnector, and collaborating with the Indonesian Government on regulatory and permitting matters. The project's next phase also emphasizes community investment in the Northern Territory, Singapore, and Indonesia.
The AAPowerLink project is poised to generate significant economic value, potentially exceeding AUD $20 billion during its construction and initial operation phases. It aims to create new green industries in the Northern Territory and provide substantial job opportunities, with an average of 6,800 direct and indirect jobs annually during construction. The project is expected to deliver electricity by the early 2030s, marking a transformative step in Australia's renewable energy landscape.
