Ørsted Releases Its Greater Changhua 1 & 2a Offshore Wind Farm Case Study: Generating Economic Value of NT$5.23 Trillion and Long-term Social Benefits

Ørsted today (24) released the "Greater Changhua 1 & 2a Offshore Wind Farm Case Study." This 900 MW offshore wind farm has generated NT$402 billions in industrial value for Taiwan over the past 6 years of development activities. When considering the subsequent "induced consumption" effects, it can create NT$523 billion in economic value, surpassing the annual output value of Taiwan's electric vehicle industry last year, which was NT$400 billion.
Greater Changhua 1 (installed capacity of 605.2 MW) and Greater Changhua 2a (installed capacity of 294.8 MW), with a total installed capacity of approximately 900 MW. In April 2018, Greater Changhua 1 & 2a were allocated 900 MW of Taipower grid capacity. Under the FIT (Feed-In Tariff) system and the Industrial Relevance Plan policy framework, Taiwan's local offshore wind power supply chain was built and developed from scratch.
Commissioned by Ørsted, the study was conducted by the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER), providing in-depth data analysis of Greater Changhua 1 & 2a and assessing their contributions to Taiwan's economy. This includes the ripple effects on various industries, such as metal manufacturing, construction, and engineering, and subsequent induced consumption effects.

Per Mejnert Kristensen, Asia-Pacific President at Ørsted, stated: "Greater Changhua 1 & 2a is Taiwan's first GW-class offshore wind farm. The study demonstrates that large-scale offshore wind projects can bring significant long-term benefits to industries, communities, and the environment. Ørsted is ready to assist the Asia-Pacific region in unlocking its green energy transition potential."
Christy Wang, Chairperson at Ørsted Taiwan, said: "Since the beginning of its operations in Taiwan, Ørsted has remained dedicated to the development, construction, and operation of offshore wind farms and creating long-term value over the wind farm's lifecycle of several decades. This case study presents the actual results of Ørsted's efforts over the past few years, creating thousands of job opportunities, fostering new local industries, developing innovative technologies, and nurturing talent."
