Eolmed Floating Wind Farm Starts Taking Shape in Mediterranean Sea
Bourbon Subsea Services has successfully installed a Floating Electrical Hub (FEH)[1] at the Eolmed floating offshore wind farm in southern France, marking the completion of the initial phase of the 30 MW project. The FEH, connected to three 10 MW-rated Vestas wind turbines, is expected to generate over 110 million kWh/year by 2025, meeting the energy needs of 50,000 residents.

Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation (Eurus Energy) announced today that Dohoku Wind Farm LLC, a group company of Eurus Energy, has completed construction of the north section (capacity: 68.8 MW) of the “Ashikawa Wind Farm” (capacity: 128.8 MW) in Toyotomi Town, Hokkaido, and its commencement of commercial operation on January 4, 2024. When the south section is completed, the “Ashikawa Wind Farm” will be the largest onshore wind farm in Japan.

German wind turbine manufacturer Nordex has received an order for 106 megawatts (MW) from Capital Energy in Spain, the company has announced. The agreement covers 18 N163/5.X turbines for the Mareas I & II wind farm. They will be delivered in spring 2025 and are expected to be operational in June of the same year. The agreement also includes a 20-year service agreement. The Mareas I & II wind farm is located near Mequinenza in the province of Zaragoza.

On 1 January 2024, JERA Co., Inc. (JERA) and Green Power Investment Corporation (GPI) began operations at the Ishikari Bay New Port Offshore Wind Farm—the largest commercial wind farm in Japan and the first in Japan to adopt large 8,000 kW wind turbines—which they own through Green Power Ishikari GK, a special-purpose corporation (SPC) [1].

European energy firms Equinor and BP terminated their agreement to sell power to New York state from their proposed Empire Wind 2 offshore wind farm, citing rising inflation, higher borrowing costs, and supply chain issues. "This agreement reflects changed economic circumstances on an industry-wide scale and repositions an already mature project to continue development in anticipation of new offtake opportunities," Equinor said in a statement on 3rd Jan, in an apparent reference to a new offshore wind solicitation launched by New York in November. The solicitation allows companies to exit old contracts and re-offer projects at higher prices. The winners of an expedited solicitation for offshore wind will be announced in February.

However, considering the German government's explicit goal of climate neutrality by 2045 and recognizing that some industrial processes cannot achieve net-zero emissions, GRÜNE in Germany has announced a change in stance and is now willing to explore the feasibility of technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) or Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU).
