The British Office Taipei and Taiwan's Energy Administration under the Ministry of Economic Affairs jointly hosted the "UK–Taiwan 20th Anniversary Renewable Energy Gala Dinner" on April 1, 2026, at the Grand Hyatt Taipei. The event brought together senior government officials and industry representatives from both sides. UK Trade Envoy to Taiwan, Lord Faulkner of Worcester, and Director-General Chuang Ming-chi attended the event, marking two decades of close collaboration and celebrating the remarkable evolution of offshore wind energy from early-stage planning to a mature industry.

Taiwan Launches Round 3 Offshore Wind Zonal Development Auction Mechanism with 3.6GW Capacity Target
On the 27th, the MOEA announced the "Directions for Allocating Installed Capacity of Offshore Wind Potential Zones" guidelines for offshore wind zonal development Round 3, following 2 briefing sessions and 3 stakeholder consultation meetings. The application process will commence on April 1, 2026, with a six-month preparation period provided to developers. Submissions will close on September 30, and the selection results are scheduled to be announced before the end of the year.

Formosa 2 Offshore Wind Farm (Formosa 2) on 23rd announced the successful completion of its refinancing, securing approximately NT$58.9 billion. This transaction marks the first completed offshore wind refinancing in both Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific region. The deal received an enthusiastic response from the financial market, achieving more than two times oversubscription and setting a new benchmark in Taiwan's offshore wind financing history.

The South Korean government is set to overhaul its offshore wind power development framework by introducing a planned site designation system, under which suitable locations will be identified in advance by the state. In parallel, a pan-governmental integrated body will handle permitting procedures in a streamlined manner, replacing the fragmented approval process previously led by private developers.

Japan's largest-scale offshore wind farmbegins commercial operation With the aim of "ALL JAPAN" to achieve 60% local procurement by 2040
One of Japan's largest offshore wind farms has started commercial operation in the prefecture of Hokkaido. Tokyo-based renewable energy company Green Power Investment built the facility in Ishikari Bay, off the coast of western Hokkaido. It has 14 turbines, each of which is 196 meters tall. The wind farm started commercial operation at the start of the year. The facility is estimated to be able to provide electricity for up to 83,000 households. The power will be sold to a local utility company. There are also plans to use the electricity to produce hydrogen, a next-generation power source.

Taipower Company explains that in 2014, Taichung Power Plant (TPP) reached the highest levels of air pollution, coal consumption, and carbon emissions in its history. In recent years, Taipower has been actively addressing these issues through energy transformation, increasing gas and green energy use, and improving air pollution control equipment. The results include a 6 million-ton reduction in coal usage, a more than 60% decrease in air pollution, and a 30% reduction in carbon emissions.

Ming-Hsin Kung, Head of the National Development Council, stated that the first transaction in carbon trading might involve foreign carbon credit transactions. The initial stage online doesn't currently offset carbon fees, and specific reductions are still unclear as related regulations are expected to be formulated next year.

While reaffirming the 3% deficit target, it eases the requirements for expenditure cuts, reflecting the post-pandemic reality.
